For those of you who just HAVE to have something sweet, I highly suggest sticking to snacking on a honeycrisp apple or ripe banana rather than sugary granules and syrups. In this recent article, the highly praised agave nectar syrup is the target. It explains that this “diabetic friendly” sweetener has a whopping 90% fructose, despite its low glycemic index. Thats 35% higher than high fructose corn syrup and 40% higher than table sugar! Think you’re making the healthy choice by using honey or agave nectar to sweeten your coffee and desserts? Even though something claims to be “good for you” always do research. As stated in the article: “Agave nectar syrup is a triumph of marketing over science. True, it has a low-glycemic index, but so does gasoline — that doesn’t mean it’s good for you.”
Try using apple sauce to sweeten baked desserts and skip sugar all together when it comes to coffee and grapefruit… both can and should be enjoyed without the addition of natural or artificial sweeteners.
